Updated
A Spotify QR code is a QR code that opens a track, album, playlist or podcast on Spotify when scanned with any phone camera; on Sptfy every short link comes with one, in your colour, as a PNG, and every scan counts as a click. Because the code points at your sptfy.co link rather than at Spotify directly, it can also fire your remarketing pixels and be re-pointed after it is printed.
Spotify Codes vs QR codes
Spotify has its own scannable image, the Spotify Code: the row of bars that looks like a soundwave, offered in the app's Share menu. As of 2026 it only works with the camera inside the Spotify app; a fan who points their normal phone camera at it gets nothing. It also tells you nothing about who scanned it.
A QR code scans with the built-in camera on essentially every phone and opens a URL. If that URL is a Sptfy link, the scan is counted in your analytics and, with tracking on, your pixels fire before Spotify opens. The trade-off is that a QR code doesn't look like Spotify. Sptfy lets you pick the colour, so it can at least match the poster.
Make one in Sptfy
- Create a short link for the track, album, playlist or podcast. The shorten a Spotify link guide covers that in five steps.
- In the dashboard, open the QR code for that link.
- Pick a colour. Dark on a light background scans most reliably; a colour pulled from your artwork works as long as the contrast stays high.
- Download the PNG and drop it into your design.
Pick the slug with print in mind. Some people will type the link rather than scan it, so sptfy.co/your-song printed under the code is worth the space. The custom short link guide has the naming rules.
Where musicians use them
- Gig posters and flyers, where the code replaces an unreadable URL.
- The sign on the merch table, so people can listen on the way home.
- Vinyl and CD inserts, stickers and download cards.
- A slide on the stage screen between sets, or the end card of a video. Phones scan a screen as easily as paper.
- Business cards and press kits, pointing at your artist profile.
Track scans and retarget scanners
A scan opens the link in the phone's browser, so it is a click like any other. Your dashboard shows visits, approximate visitors, city, device and time of day for about 90 days. City is the interesting one for a touring act: it shows which shows the poster actually worked at.
Use one slug per placement and the picture gets sharper: sptfy.co/song-poster, sptfy.co/song-merch, sptfy.co/song-insert, all pointing at the same song, then compare them in the Slug breakdown. Spotify link analytics explains every column.
Pixels fire on scans too. Set your Meta, TikTok, Google Analytics 4, Google Ads remarketing or Snap Pixel IDs once in Settings, and a fan who scans the poster at your show lands in the same audience as one who tapped the bio link, ready for the next release's ads.
Print tips
- Size. At least 2 cm across on a flyer, larger on a poster. A rough rule is that a code scans from about ten times its own width, so a code meant to be read across a room needs to be big.
- Contrast. Dark code, light background. Don't lay it over busy artwork.
- Quiet zone. Leave a blank margin around the code, roughly the width of four of its smallest squares.
- Test the proof. Scan the printed version with two or three different phones before the full run.
- Print the URL. A short slug under the code is a fallback for anyone whose camera won't cooperate.
And because the code encodes your Sptfy link, not the Spotify URL, it never goes stale: change the destination in the dashboard and every printed copy follows. The FAQ has the short version of the rest.
FAQ
Is the Spotify QR code free?
Yes. Every Sptfy link comes with a QR code at no cost. There is no paid tier, no link cap and no scan cap.
Can I change the colour?
Yes. Pick a colour for the code in the dashboard before you download the PNG. Keep it dark on a light background for reliable scanning.
Do scans show up in analytics?
Yes. A scan opens the short link in the phone's browser, so it is counted like any other click: visits, approximate visitors, city, device and time of day, kept for about 90 days. Pixels fire on scans too.
Can I change where the code goes after printing?
Yes. The code encodes your sptfy.co link, not the Spotify URL. Edit the link's destination in the dashboard to any other Spotify URL and every printed code follows it. The slug itself cannot be renamed.
