What Is a Spotify Smart Link? Free Guide for Artists
A Spotify smart link is a short, branded URL that sends fans to Spotify while you track clicks and fire retargeting pixels. What it is, what it isn't, free options.

A Spotify smart link is a short URL you control that sends fans to a track, album, artist, playlist, show or episode on Spotify while recording the click and, optionally, firing your ad pixels. Compare that with the link Spotify gives you when you tap Share: open.spotify.com/track/4cOdK2wGLETKBW3PvgPWqT?si=a1b2c3d4. That link works, but it tells you nothing about who clicked it, it looks like noise in a bio or a caption, and it gives your ad accounts nothing to work with.
What a smart link actually does between the click and Spotify
When a fan clicks a Sptfy link with tracking on, three things happen in well under a second. A small branded page loads: your cover art blurred across the background, the sharp artwork in front, the title and artist, and a spinner that says "Opening Spotify...". While that page is on screen, your pixels fire, each recording a page view for the network you configured. Then the page hands the fan off to Spotify. Sptfy waits for the pixels to finish loading, with a hard cap of 2.5 seconds so a slow ad network can never hold a fan hostage.
With tracking off, none of that happens. The click is still counted in your analytics, and the fan is redirected straight to Spotify. Browsers with JavaScript disabled fall back to a plain refresh, and crawlers or link-preview bots never fire pixels at all, so your audiences don't fill up with robots.
Smart link vs short link vs link-in-bio page
The terms get mixed up, so here is the distinction Sptfy uses:
- Short link. A shorter URL that redirects to the long one. Nothing else.
- Smart link. A short link that also records the click and can run tracking pixels. That is what Sptfy makes. Some services use "smart link" to mean a landing page with buttons for every streaming store; Sptfy doesn't build those, it sends fans to Spotify only.
- Link-in-bio page. A page with several links on it. Sptfy isn't one, but a Sptfy link works well as the Spotify button inside one. See Spotify link for Instagram bio.
Sptfy also doesn't do pre-saves, custom domains, or multi-platform pages. If you need those, a paid smart-link service is the right tool, and you can still use a Sptfy link inside it.
What you can put behind one
Any of the six Spotify content types: tracks, albums, artists, playlists, shows (podcasts) and episodes. Sptfy accepts every common form of the URL, including share links with ?si= parameters, regional links with an intl-xx/ prefix, embed/ links, and spotify: URIs copied from the desktop app. Whatever you paste is normalised to one clean open.spotify.com address before it is saved. Links to anything other than Spotify are rejected.
Why "free" usually excludes pixels
Most smart-link services offer a free tier for basic links and keep remarketing pixels, deeper analytics and custom domains for paid plans. That is the part Sptfy does differently. It fires pixels for five networks, Meta, TikTok, Google Analytics 4, Google Ads and Snap, on every click of every link, for free, with no link or click caps. As far as we know it is the only free smart link that does.
It can be free because it is a side project built by musicians for musicians: people who wanted pixels on their own Spotify links without a subscription. Sptfy is not affiliated with Spotify; it just makes the link to Spotify work harder. The about page has the rest.
How to make one in under a minute
- Paste a Spotify link at sptfy.co. The artwork, title and a few suggested slugs appear.
- Pick a slug, so your link reads
sptfy.co/your-song. Slugs are 2 to 48 characters of letters, numbers and hyphens. - Enter your email and agree to the terms. Your link is reserved for 24 hours.
- Click the activation email. The link goes live and you are logged in to the dashboard, where you can add pixels in Settings and watch the clicks come in. If you were already logged in, the link is live the moment you create it.
From there, read why musicians put pixels on their Spotify links, or go straight to what the click analytics show. If you are weighing Sptfy against a paid tool, free alternatives to paid smart-link services is the honest comparison.
FAQ
Is a Spotify smart link the same as a Spotify short link?
A short link only shortens the URL. A smart link also records the click and can fire tracking pixels before sending the fan on to Spotify. Sptfy does both.
Does a smart link slow down getting to Spotify?
With tracking on, fans see a branded page with your artwork for a fraction of a second, 2.5 seconds at most, while pixels load. With tracking off, it is a direct redirect.
Can I use a smart link for a playlist or a podcast?
Yes. Sptfy accepts tracks, albums, artists, playlists, shows and episodes.
Do I need an account?
You need an email address. Your first link is reserved for 24 hours and goes live when you click the activation email; that email is also your login. There are no passwords.
Is Sptfy really free?
Yes. There is no paid tier, no link cap and no click cap. The only limit is 10 link creations per hour per IP address.
