Spotify Retargeting Ads for Musicians: Pixel Your Links
You can't put a pixel on Spotify, but you can put one on the link to it. How musicians build retargeting audiences from Spotify link clicks, free with Sptfy.
Updated
Spotify retargeting means showing ads only to people who have already clicked through to your music, and because you can't put a pixel on Spotify itself, musicians build that audience by putting the pixel on the link that leads there. Every ad network works the same way: a pixel on a page you control records the visit, the network matches it to a person, and you can show that person ads later. Spotify is not a page you control. A Sptfy short link is.
The gap: you can't pixel Spotify
Spotify for Artists tells you how many people streamed, saved and followed, but never who they are, and it never tells Meta, TikTok, Google or Snap either. You can't add a line of code to your artist page. So the usual playbook, where an ad sends someone to your website and the pixel there builds an audience, breaks down the moment the destination is open.spotify.com.
The workaround is simple. Route the link fans click through a short link whose landing page you do control. With tracking on, a Sptfy link shows a small branded page for a fraction of a second, 2.5 seconds at most, while your pixels fire, then opens Spotify. Fans barely notice it. Your ad accounts see a page view.
What a pixel on a short link records
The pixel runs on the Sptfy page, not inside Spotify, so it records exactly one thing: that a browser loaded sptfy.co/your-slug. It happens in the background as the fan clicks through: they tap your link, the pixel fires on the in-between page on the way to Spotify, and neither of you has to do anything for it to happen. Per network, that is:
- Meta (Facebook) Pixel: a
PageViewevent, with a no-script image fallback for browsers that have JavaScript off. - TikTok Pixel: a page event, sent with
ttq.page(). - Google Analytics 4: a
page_viewwith your slug as the path andsptfy.coas the hostname. - Google Ads: a remarketing ping from your AW- tag. Remarketing only. No conversion label, no conversion event.
- Snap Pixel: a
PAGE_VIEWevent.
And what you're not getting: no events from inside Spotify (streams, saves, follows, playlist adds), no conversion events, no custom events, no Conversions API or server-side sending, no advanced matching. Sptfy accepts validated pixel IDs only, so there is no Google Tag Manager container and no custom script either. If your ad strategy depends on conversion events, a pixel on a link isn't the tool. If it depends on audiences, read on.
Why "clicked your Spotify link" is a good audience
A page view sounds thin until you think about who triggers it. Nobody clicks a link to a song by accident. The people in this audience saw your post, your ad or your QR code, decided they wanted to hear the music, and acted. That is a warmer signal than a video view or a profile visit, and far more specific than an interest audience of people who like a genre. It's also an audience that exists nowhere else: Spotify won't hand it to you, and a raw open.spotify.com link throws it away.
The retargeting loop
- Put a Sptfy link everywhere your music gets shared: bio, captions, stories, ads, QR codes on merch and posters.
- Fans click. Sptfy counts the click in your analytics and fires your pixels on the way to Spotify.
- In each ad platform, build an audience of people who visited
sptfy.co, or a narrower one of people who visited a particular slug. - Run ads to that audience when you have something to say: the next single, a video, tour dates. These are people who already clicked once.
- Build a lookalike or similar audience from the clickers to reach new listeners. Most platforms offer one.
Then repeat. Each release seeds the audience for the next one. Your click analytics tell you which channels the clicks came from; the pixels let you act on them.
Set it up once
Go to Dashboard → Settings → Tracking Pixels and paste your IDs into the fields: "Meta (Facebook) Pixel ID", "TikTok Pixel ID", "Google Analytics 4 Measurement ID", "Google Ads Conversion ID" (Google's name for the AW- number; Sptfy uses it for remarketing only) and "Snap Pixel ID". Tracking switches on automatically the first time you enter an ID, and from then on every click of every link you own fires all the pixels you've set. Each link also has a "Disable Tracking" switch that turns that one link into a direct redirect; its clicks still show in analytics.
Most smart-link services put pixels behind a paid plan. Sptfy doesn't, for any of the five networks. As far as we know, it is the only free smart link that fires remarketing pixels at all.
Per-network quick start
Meta. The usual starting point, since Instagram and Facebook are where most link clicks come from. Paste your 15–16 digit Pixel ID, then build a Custom Audience of website visitors. Meta Pixel setup guide.
TikTok. Same idea for the in-app browser most TikTok fans arrive in. Use a dedicated slug for your TikTok bio. TikTok Pixel setup guide.
Google Analytics 4. Not an ad pixel, but it records a page_view per click, and GA4 audiences can feed Google Ads. GA4 setup guide.
Google Ads. The AW- remarketing tag builds a website-visitor list for YouTube and Display retargeting. Remarketing only, no conversion tracking. Google Ads remarketing guide.
Snap. Worth adding if your fans are on Snapchat. The Pixel ID is a UUID and the setup is the same four steps. Snap Pixel setup guide.
Being upfront with fans
Retargeting only works in the long run if fans don't feel tricked. Sptfy's tracking page is visible, not hidden: fans see your artwork and "Opening Spotify..." rather than a blank redirect, and the page is marked noindex so it never shows up in search. Crawlers and link-preview bots never fire pixels, so your audiences are made of people, not robots. What Sptfy collects when someone clicks, and how long it is kept, is set out in the privacy policy; the about page explains who makes it and why.

FAQ
Can a pixel on my Spotify link track streams or saves?
No. The pixel fires on the Sptfy page before Spotify opens, so it records the click and nothing after it. Streams, saves and follows happen inside Spotify, where no third-party pixel can run. Use Spotify for Artists for those numbers.
Which pixels does Sptfy support?
Five: Meta (Facebook) Pixel, TikTok Pixel, Google Analytics 4, the Google Ads remarketing tag, and Snap Pixel. You can set any or all of them, and they fire together on every click.
Do I have to add the pixel to every link?
No. Enter your pixel IDs once in Dashboard → Settings → Tracking Pixels and they fire on every click of every link you own. Each link has a Disable Tracking switch if you want that one link to be a direct redirect.
Does Sptfy support the Conversions API or server-side events?
No. Sptfy fires browser pixels only, and only a page view. There is no Conversions API, no server-side event, no advanced matching, and no custom or conversion events.
Does the pixel slow down the redirect?
Barely. With tracking on, fans see a branded page with your cover art for a fraction of a second, 2.5 seconds at most, while the pixels load. Then Spotify opens. With tracking off, it is a direct redirect.
